Browser extension

The Flared browser extension is a URL shortener in your browser toolbar. Shorten the page you are on, or any link on it, then copy the short URL or its QR code. It works in Chrome and is free on every plan.

Install

  1. Open Flared in the Chrome Web Store and choose Add to Chrome.
  2. Choose the puzzle icon in the toolbar, then the pin next to Flared.
  3. Choose the Flared button, then Sign in to Flared. Sign in, choose the workspace, and allow access.

The extension can see your links and domains and create links. It works in the one workspace you choose. If you do not use it for 30 days, sign in again.

Shorten a page

Choose the Flared button, or press Alt+Shift+F. The popup shows the page address. Pick a domain and type an ending, or leave the ending empty for a random one. Then choose Shorten.

The short URL is copied for you. You can also choose Copy QR code, which copies the QR code as an image, or Open in Flared, which opens the link’s page with its clicks.

To change the shortcut, open chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Shorten with a right-click

Right-click a link and choose Shorten link with Flared, or right-click the page and choose Shorten this page with Flared. The short URL is copied for you, with a random ending on your default domain. The Flared button shows OK when it is copied, or ! when something went wrong. Open the popup to see the link or the error.

Permissions

The extension uses these permissions:

Opens the Flared sign-in page in a small window.
Current tab
Reads the address of the tab you are on, only when you click the Flared button.
Right-click menu
Adds the two Shorten items to the right-click menu.
Storage
Keeps you signed in on this device.
Clipboard
Copies the short URL after you shorten a link from the right-click menu.
Flared sites
Talks to api.flared.page to create links and to flared.page to sign in. No other site.

The extension sends Flared only the addresses that you choose to shorten. It does not read the pages you visit, and it has no analytics. The privacy policy has the details.

Sign out or remove

Choose Sign out in the popup to sign out on this browser. To end the extension’s access on every device at once, open Connections in the Flared dashboard and remove it under Apps. Removing the extension from the browser deletes its sign-in from that browser.

Support

Email support@flared.page. The other ways to use Flared are in the documentation.
